Shopping in Spring 2020
With lockdown still underway and as the weather warms up, you may be wondering how to update your wardrobe this season – both for yourself at home and for some new pieces to show off when you’re out in the world again. It’s always great to shop small to support designers and artists as well as to get unique and imaginative pieces that will make you stand out. Now more than ever, small fashion brands are relying on online sales to stay afloat. It also allows for bigger companies to focus on shipping out essential goods to the people who need them. Here are a few pieces I have been looking at for this season, and some small businesses to buy them from.
- A Matching Set
Matching top and bottom sets have been popping up for the last few seasons, and the great part about them is there’s one for every occasion. This set from Omighty is on my wishlist right now, as it has everything I’m looking for in a set. It’s soft and comfortable while still looking put together. The colorblocked pattern is super unique and a great throwback mod style and it comes in four colorways, but my favorite is these nude tones. These pieces could also be styled easily on their own for some versatility in your closet. This set can work for a cute-but-comfy look during a video happy hour, and will be just as chic when we’re outside again in the warmer weather. Omighty has a huge selection of unique matching sets to choose from.
This matching set is from our brand, L Royalty! I love this set and it’s a great addition to your closet for the spring and summer. Maxi skirts are another trend right now, and this purple floral one is great with the black bralette top or on its own!
For a dressier look, you can live out all your Clueless dreams in this amazing blazer and skirt set from Glitters for Dinner. They have a full collection of Clueless inspired tartan outfits in a multitude of colorways and styles. I also love this girly pink gingham set for the pop of pink everyone’s closet needs.
- Statement Jeans
Unique jeans are a way to update your classic denim look and express yourself in a fun way. You can find them painted, distressed, bleached, or bedazzled. They offer a great alternative to your regular favorites and are a great statement piece. You can pair them with any plain top and still get a mega impact with your outfit.
Depop is a great place to find a unique pair of jeans for less than retail prices. These are one of great statement jeans I found on the site.. I love the flattering fit of high waisted boyfriend jeans, they’re cool and comfortable. Depop is a perfect place for spring shopping right now. The site is made up of individual sellers, so you’re helping regular people put some extra money in their pockets. With so many people at home, many depop sellers have been hard at work on their shops and aren’t as affected by shipping delays either. Buying used clothes is also a better option for the environment than always buying something brand new.
At L. Royalty, we love all things pink, and these adorable hand-painted jeans are no exception. These mom jeans have been decorated with pink clouds and butterflies to bring an artsy touch to your wardrobe this spring. If you have paint at home, trying to DIY your own pair of painted statement jeans is a super fun activity!
I also love the designs of Ryan Holland, a designer local to my Queens, New York area who reworks old jeans into special pairs you’ll never want to take off. Plus, there’s no bigger statement than pants remade with fabric scarps from seven different pairs of jeans.
3. 70s Inspired Florals
When it comes to spring florals, we’re currently loving a throwback 70s print. Tons of looks from the decade are coming back, but the brightly colored, graphic florals really stand out.
This pink playsuit from Closet Mod has a great flower print with a flower buckle and buttons to match. Great to throw on for any spring or summer day and is sure to catch everyone’s eye!
Yesterday People is a great shop for any retro lover. A classic printed button-up top is an easy choice for spring. Tie it up or tuck it into some jeans, and you’re good to go! A mod a-line shift dress in a retro style like this one is perfect for an easy floral option. These pieces are made to order, so it will take a few weeks to ship, which may seem like forever compared to some big businesses. However these “fast fashion” brands don’t have the quality or environmental consciousness of smaller businesses is. The “slow fashion” business model is also this brand’s greatest strength. Every piece is made to order, which means you can get any of their products in your choice of 45 different throwback florals. I also love buying from clothing companies like this knowing I am helping the environment, a female small business owner and designer, and I will get a handcrafted piece that lasts a lifetime.
- Fun Accessories
What’s an outfit without some accessories to complete it, right? This is where I have some of the most fun with my own looks. Buying unique accessories is a great way to update your look if you don’t have the money for a whole new wardrobe. It’s also a great way to support some of the awesome artists out there!
Of course I can’t talk accessories without showing off some of my own designs from my depop. Nothing says spring more than earrings made from real lemons! I’ve also been getting a lot of love for these corked jar earrings, as well as these 90s throwback earrings with safety pins and lots of glitter.
Keeping with the 70s throwback theme this spring, Our Mindflowers is perfect for all of your retro accessory needs. I own a chain belt from them that I wear all the time. It pairs great with jeans and a tee as seen here, but I also love to wear it over a skirt for an extra touch. You can choose a charm when you purchase your belt, and they sell plenty of charms separately as well. This means that you can get a variety and keep your look updated. Their new zodiac collection is also great for anyone that loves horoscopes like I do. There’s a variety of styles in every sign – each with their own unique color palette.
These are only a few trends you can shop for this spring, and only a handful of the hundreds of great small businesses out there have been featured. If you have the money to spend on updating your wardrobe, I encourage you to get online and shop small to support all of the artists working hard to make ends meet during these times. There’s nothing quite like getting handmade products that you know have been designed and created ethically and with love.
