Galentine’s Day was popularized by Parks and Recreation back in 2010, and since then it’s been celebrated on February 13th as a way to appreciate their platonic friends during an otherwise romantic season. I think it’s more important than ever this year, where many of us haven’t been able to see our friends as often as we like, and we’ve all been supporting each other from a distance, to take time to be grateful to our friends who have been there for us during this time. This week, we’ll be looking at some ways to celebrate Galentine’s day even when you can’t meet with your friends in person.
Hosting an Online Watch Party
One great way to be able to see your friends and celebrate the day together is to get together and watch something all together. If you already like Parks and Recreation, it would be great to watch the Galentine’s Day episode as a group. You could also rewatch a movie that you all enjoy, or give something new a try.
Sending Snail Mail
Taking the time to send a valentine to your friends is a great way to show how much you appreciate them and that you’re thinking of them this year. You can send a small gift or their favorite candy as a fun surprise, but even just a handwritten letter tells them that you took some time to tell them how much they mean to you for the cost of a stamp. There are tons of free printables online, like the ones pictured below from The Spotted Olive, which you can simply print, personalize, and mail! Sending mail isn’t nearly as common as it used to be, and I know that I treasure every card, note, and doodle that my friends give to me. Plus everyone loves getting something fun in the mail between all the bills and advertisements!
Powerpoint Zoom Party
These are a great way to spend time with your friends and share a ton of laughs! For this activity, everyone in your group prepares a powerpoint that they then present to everyone else. These can be about anything from fun memories and inside jokes that you share, to an analysis of your favorite TV show or celebrity, or any random topic you’re an expert on that you’d love to tell your friends about. They’re always sure to spark tons of conversation and keep you entertained.
Craft and Dinner Party
If you are able to see your friends in person, a craft party is sure to be a ton of fun. You can make food yourself, host a potluck, or order in from a local restaurant. Then you can get together all the materials you need to make a fun craft together. The possibilities are endless, even on a budget. You can paint along to a Bob Ross video and vote on each other’s results, or make a stop at the craft store for some jewelry-making materials and end the night with cute matching pairs of earrings!
